The Living Well Hub - Scalloway

Wednesdays - 2pm - 4pm

Staff are available in the Hub to speak to anyone who might feel that they need any help in their lives, but who may be unable to contact services themselves, or indeed unsure who is the best person to help.

Options include linking individuals with local community organisations or voluntary groups, as well as referral to other support services including Shetland Island Council and NHS Shetland.

Anyone can pop along the Hub and have a chat and a cuppa. Everyone is welcome.

The Shetland Community School of Ballet

Saturdays

The Shetland Community School of Ballet is a Constituted Community Group. Our Teacher has fully enhanced disclosures. We provide classes in ballet for children and teenagers with ballet and other dance genres. The remit is to help them discover the joy of dance and learn theatrical skills through performance, develop their well-being and confidence, plus help their mental health and well being.

From 1st February 2025, we shall be offering a brand new class called Baby Ballet which caters for the 3+ years old as there is a demand. This will be a class on Saturday mornings starting at 09:30 and runs for 20 minutes concentrating on movement, coordination, ability to listen and recognise musical genres and generally move to music and get used to being in a group of other children of a similar age. We have three of our older girls including our BBO certified classroom assistant who assist with the younger children in class time.

We also will be offering Jazz classes on Saturday afternoons open to all ages from 7 years upwards and an Adult Ballet class which is open to young adults and more mature people.

We are a Registered Ballet School with the British Ballet Organisation. We teach Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern, and Tap. Matthew Lawrence, LLB, Dip Dans NZSD started dancing in 1965, trained in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing for 16 years. He graduated from The New Zealand School of Dance in 1979, danced with The Royal New Zealand Ballet, The Krefeld Vereinighte Städtische Opern Ballett in Germany and worked in TV and Film. He worked in London's West End, on many different musicals and plays, in stage management and specialist crewing. He worked as a muse for various dance choreographers. He has taught in Shetland since 2007, works for the NHS and acts in local drama productions. He plays trombone for fun and enjoys creating dance shows for the school. He also runs Adult Ballet - noone is too old to dance!!
